Day 5 Thoughts

I have been taking on LBL every year for the past 5 years, and quite frankly I love doing it. It such a grounding experience that puts you momentarily in the shoes of those doing it rough, reminding you of all the good you have in your life and the many things we take for granted daily. It is also a chance to raise money for those who lack the vital resources and opportunities that are just given rights in the western world.
Each year I try and make LBL more of a challenge for myself, and this year was without a doubt the hardest challenge week I've put myself through. And if you've had the pleasure of dealing with me at some stage over the past few days, you would know how much of a struggle this week truly was. amidst working two jobs, my final week of uni and moving houses I decided that I wanted to undertake my challenge week for LBL. I knew it would be hard but I really wanted to do it the same week as everyone else.
I woke up on my second challenge day mentally and physically exhausted (not to mention hungry). I had to leave for work at 10.30 which meant I was only able to eat breakfast before going. I don't know what happened but I completely destroyed the one meal I could eat before work, with my pancakes turning out as anything but edible. With no other choice but to eat them, I went to work having had nothing but semi-raw pancakes with the caffeine withdrawals starting to onset. I came home not only starving, but in the worst possible mood. My plain bowl of rice did little to improve the situation I was in and I went to bed that night both defeated and angry at myself for choosing the worst possible week to do this.
I woke up the next morning determined to have a decent breakfast. As I was cooking my pancakes (which turned out pretty good if I do say so myself) I had a change in attitude. I realised that all the things that were stressing me out and making me grumpy were actually all privileges of mine. The impending uni deadlines I had were a reminder that I had received a good education which enabled me to undertake further study that will lead me to the field I want to work in. The inconvenience of going to work was a reminder that I had a stable job that provides me with enough income to look after myself and not have to live like those below the extreme poverty line. The burden of moving house was a reminder that I have a roof over my head each and every night and that I never have to worry about having a secure place to sleep during these oncoming cold winter nights. Most importantly, I realised that taking LBL isn't supposed to be easy. It's supposed to give you an insight of just how hard some people really do it day in and day out.
A lot of people ask me why I'm so strict on the rules and why I don't just sneak a cheeky cup of tea that no one would know about? the answer is because this is just 5 days out of the year for me. I can go back to eating as normal, and way above the poverty line tomorrow. However, millions of other people around the world won't have the same choice that I do. Because what is a challenge to me is their real everyday life - with many living in conditions far worse than some of us will ever know. If I can't even sacrifice 5 days out of the year to help those in need then how are things ever going to improve?
While I acknowledge that participating in LBL is only a very small glimpse into the world of extreme poverty and by no means a real experience of it, this campaign has a real impact. Oaktree works at the ground level to dismantle the systematic structures that keep the cycle of poverty ongoing. And this year their work is the most critical, with global poverty on the rise for the first time in more than 20 years due to the pandemic. So please, I urge that if you are in a position to donate and you too would like to see poverty eradicated from our world please help by supporting me at the link below. I can assure you, that every little bit counts and gets us one step closer to a world free from poverty. And I for one, can't wait to see the day this dream becomes a reality! ???
