Whether it’s climate change, extreme poverty or pervasive inequality, the challenges our generation is facing are enormous.
2015 is on track to be the hottest year in recorded history. Inequality is spiralling out of control. And vulnerable communities are being pushed deeper into poverty through increased droughts, floods, hunger and disease.
Young Australians want a Government that acts with courage and leadership on these big challenges. However, for too long, politics in this country has been devoid of leadership.
Last night marked the third consecutive time a sitting Prime Minister has failed to see out a full term. We deal not in bold solutions for the challenges we face, but in three word slogans, personality politics, and a leadership merry-go-round. We can do better. And we must do better.
As young Australians, and as the generation that will inherit the consequences of this lack of vision, we demand better. We call on Malcolm Turnbull to provide the leadership we need and ensure a collective future we can be proud of by:
Making a commitment of $400 million to international climate finance - funds that will allow for developing countries to adapt to climate change.
Committing to a pollution reduction target in line with keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees.
Committing to 100% renewable energy by 2030.
- Committing to growing the aid budget to 0.7% GNI by 2030.
