We know stretching $2 is hard but here are the specifics.

  • For hard to calculate items like cooking oil, salt, pepper and spices, budget $1 as the cost.
  • If you receive free food or use produce from the garden, you’ll still need to calculate it into your budget.
  • Water is free but coffee/tea will have to come out of your budget.
  • You can use items you already have, as long as you factor in cost.
  • The challenge starts on Monday morning and ends on Friday night. Weekends not included!
  • You don’t have to do the challenge in actual LBL Challenge Week. You can do it anytime in May - June, and fundraisers stay open till 30th June!

When is Live Below the Line?

Live Below the Line launches 19th April and stays live until 30th June. The actual Challenge week though is 24th - 28th May.

Is there an age limit?

No, but anyone under the age of 16 must have parental permission to take part in the challenge.

Do I need parental consent?

No, although it would be good to let them know and get them involved.

Is Live Below The Line Safe?

It is, but planning ahead is essential. Make sure your food is nutritious and filling, and drink a lot of water while you’re taking the challenge. We recommend eating regularly – no skipping meals!

How do I keep track of how much I’m spending?

The best way to do it is to plan your meals, make a shopping list, and spend your $10 for the week in one hit. Then you can divide your food into portions over the five days.

I’ve got health concerns, can I still participate in Live Below the Line?

If you have a medical condition, take regular medication, have recently been unwell, in hospital or had surgery, we strongly recommend you seek approval from your treating doctor before participating in the challenge.

Can I keep up my usual exercise routine during the challenge?

Because you’ll likely have a very different diet from usual, we recommend taking it easy during the challenge. Trying to keep up your usual exercise with a reduced energy intake may result in illness or injury.

What should I do if I feel weak or ill during the challenge?

Stop immediately! See your doctor if it’s required. Your health is the priority.

Can I do the challenge for more than 5 days?

You can, but we don’t recommend it because of the potential health risks. We think 5 days is enough to raise awareness and gain insight into what it’s like to live with limited choices. 

If you’d like more of a challenge though, host a Dine Below the Line with your friends or family!

Where is my money going?

The money raised through Live Below the Line funds work that tackles poverty. 76% of donations goes to work that directly fights poverty, 12% covers vital costs of accountability and admin, and another 12% goes to fundraising. Can I collect cash donations?

You definitely can! We’ve got an offline donation form here. Another option, and the easiest way for you, is to donate to your profile yourself and pocket the cash – it means your fundraising total is updated automatically.

When do donations close?

30th June 2021 so be sure to get all your fundraising done before then!
