Meet Dulce.

In Timor Leste, a country where more than a third of the population is still living in extreme poverty, opportunities for youth employment are scarce.

19 year old Dulce was faced with this very real challenge after graduating from high school. This is her story.

Through the Youth Economic Empowerment Project run by Oaktree’s overseas partner, Plan Timor Leste, Dulce was able to receive vocational training in the skills and knowledge needed to obtain a sustainable livelihood.

She now runs a successful social enterprise with several other young members of her community.

Our impact overseas

At Oaktree, we fund education and leadership programs that build the capacity and influence of young people.

Our programs fight poverty and injustice in the Asia-Pacific, and empower young people with the tools and resources they need to create change for themselves and their communities.

We’ve worked in countries like Cambodia, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea - to provide things like scholarships, career and peer counselling, school renovations, teacher training and livelihood support.

Our impact in Australia

We build the capacity and influence of young people in Australia.

Each year we transform hundreds of young Australians into agents of change, empowering them to advocate for a more just world and youth participation in decision-making.

Oaktree volunteers execute campaigns that mobilise hundreds of people, write research papers, manage teams, lobby politicians and create communication strategies that reach hundreds of thousands of Australians.

Oaktree connects youth voices to the Australian public and decision-makers to shift policy. We raise awareness and take action on issues of poverty and injustice, like Australian aid. And we advocate for youth participation in decision-making on issues that affect young people, like poverty, climate change, and development projects in their communities.

Who is Oaktree?

Oaktree began in 2003 with a simple idea - that young people have a unique role to play in building and leading a movement to end extreme poverty.

Over 15 years, Oaktree has evolved into one of Australia’s leading organisations for youth participation and empowerment. Today, Oaktree is young people leading, demanding and creating a more just world.

We’re proud to be Australia’s largest youth run organisation, with more than 250 000 members. Together, we’ve mobilised hundreds of young people on a nationwide doorknocks and campaigning events, met with hundreds of politicians, presented at international conferences and partnered with local expert organisations overseas to directly impact almost 13,000 people living in poverty.

The Cause

We are the largest generation of young people in history.

But from poverty and inequality, to conflict and climate change, young people are among the worst affected by our world’s greatest injustices.

Young people are estimated to be a third of refugees and displaced people. 40% of the world’s unemployed are young people. And in the Global South, more than half of young people live on less than $2 a day.

If we aren’t creating the solutions, who will?

With over 250,000 supporters, we are young people leading, demanding and creating a more just world.
